American tennis at its finest. Two of our childhood idles competed this past weekend during an exhibition match at the Greenbrier Hotel. Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras came head to head in a very entertaining exhibition match at the grand opening of the Greenbrier’s new tennis facility at Creekside.
Both in their 40’s, the dazzling duo showed that they still got what it takes to compete on the court, hitting staggering groundstrokes and expressed mobility, getting to those would-be winners and deflating drop shot slices.
Once on-court rivals, these two friends put on one heck of a show, despite a rain delay on Saturday. The clay court surface was primed and in 85% shape for Sunday’s continuation. Resulting in a few dead spots on the court, the surface conditions after the heavy deluge of rain made the match interesting, and at times comical. Both of the players got at least one good laugh out of the circumstances.
Supporting Team Andre was his equally as gifted wife Steffi Graf. She walked past me at the entrance of the facility, and lets just say that I had to look up. Check out those legs!
Agassi won in the third set tiebreak, just as we were getting fired up, begging for a best of 5 sets. Our wishes weren’t met, and alas we will have to idle by til the next time the tennis gods grace our area. Another event scheduled for September at Creekside, and we can’t wait to see the upcoming show and all the excitement it will surely bring!
